Analog Photography

Analog photopgraphy as a medium of expression was a spark that started in eleventh grade in an elective photography class. Back then we were even in the dark room developing our film. I remember taking my film camera to my brother’s hockey game and snapping pics of him and my mom talking before the game. He was only seven there, cooky and grimacing. Those first pictures remain my favourite.

After a brief hiatus, I found my parent’s old film camera, got it fixed up and started toying around with it. There are so many settings and apertures and so on that I learned that I’ve just forgotten now. Like anything I do, the technical details so often fly over my head and I get enraptured by the storytelling of it all. I am not a professional by any means, but I am a passionate hobbyist. I have enjoyed being behind the camera, concept creation, and art directing my visions. Only analog photography has gripped my interest as I find immense beauty in capturing something momentary, ephemeral, vulnerable, exposed, imperfect and hopefully flawed.

Apart from the breathtaking image quality and saturation of colour of film, I am most inspired by stories, moods, emotions. Moments of everyday life. I gain inspiration through nature, fashion, the 60s and 70s aesthetic and most of all the people I’m around. Carrying this camera around reminds me of my mom. She is a beautiful photographer. I love imagining her in the 90s, my age, snapping pics of her friends and her life. It’s an indescribable feeling, but with each shot I take, I feel like I get closer to seeing out of her eyes.

‘creature’

11.23. Film Canon50mm. Vancouver, BC.

A cold November day in Lynn Valley. James Amzin as my courageous subject. I wanted to emulate feelings of loss, confusion, loneliness through the satirical lense of a tutu. I wanted the evolution of James, born a raw creature, finding his wings.

‘la faktorie’

Art direction: Masha Shcherbyna

Styling: Gemme Atelier, Manu Garcia

Makeup: Manu Garcia

Subjects: Masha, El, Gi, Douglas, Manu, Leon

Heavily inspired by my first Berlin apartment and the 60 and 70s aesthetic. I wanted to emulate the vibe of Warhol’s Factory. I wanted characters. Mischief, secrecy, gossip. Class with the contrast of drinking beer on the toilet and smoking in the bath.

‘sicily vs berlin’

11.23. Film Canon50mm. Palermo, Berlin.

My first few weeks moving officially to Berlin. Cozy, cold and grunge, contrasted with Sicily- which in effect, was also quite cozy, cold and grunge.

‘home’

Winter 2023. Film Canon50mm. Vancouver, BC.

There pictures have my heart. Sweet moments on the west coast.

Featuring Jess Wickett, my forever muse.

‘montreal’

A very rambunctious weekend getaway to Montreal filled with jazz, art and love.
